Underpinning of the n550 bridge in Sigüeiro
This bridge, crossing of the State Road Network, is included in the existing heritage in which the Spanish Ministry of Public Works carries out a regular control and monitoring in order to keep them in the best conditions of safety and functionality for users.
As a result of an inspection conducted on the infrastructure in the past, they discovered the undermining of the foundations of two central piles of the bridge. These required emergency action to stabilise and protect the foundations.
CIMARQ conducted the inspection works prior to carrying out the works and compiling historical information on the infrastructure, in order to design the best option for its rehabilitation.
The decision was made to reinforce the sensitive foundations with fibre-reinforced concrete and injection between the ashlar joints in the usually submerged area, which had no ashlars and no joining material between the existing ones. This solution was the most appropriate, as the surface bedrock did not permit the installation of a breakwater protection, as this would reduce the hydraulic capacity of the infrastructure.
Taking advantage of the intervention on the bridge, other complementary works for the maintenance, protection and enhancement of the infrastructure were carried out. The works consisted of:
- Removal and treatment of vandalism paint.
- Cleaning of ashlars: removal of damp, vegetation and widespread stains..
- Jointing between ashlars with lime mortar.
- Cleaning and repainting of suspended pipes on the sides of the bridge.
- Sealing of roadway joints.
- Laying of a new roadway drainage system.
- Resurfacing.
- Development of the bridge roadway, renovating pavements, vehicle containment systems, railings and lighting poles, unifying materials, enhancing the bridge.
